Montana Roja

Montana Roja is the mountain-volcano near Playa Blanca in Lanzarote.

In English it would be called “The Red Mountain”. Many tourists call it Montana Roger but in Spanish it sounds Montanya Roha.

Some people say that in the there were mysterious signs of UFO.

Anyway it is popular destination between hikers or just for whom who likes promenades in the nature. Montana Rojas landscape is often called Martian. There ground is red containing volcanic rocks and sand. It looks amazing especially at sunset or in moonlight. Images images you can take on the hike up there!

Near the mountain there is a same name settlement. From the Montana Roja neighborhood it is a short but worth walk to the mountain. Even if you are staying in Playa Blanca you can also take a promenade from the resort. It would be a bit longer but not too much if you are ready to lengthen your hike today.

To get to the volcano search for signs on pebbles like “Al volcano” or “Volcano” and when you find a path it will be easy to reach the crater.

The mountain itself is the volcanic crater which is towering over the Playa Blanca. From the top of the mountain you could see other Canarian islands – Fuerteventura and Lobos. It takes time to admire all the views you can see from the top! Do not forget to take some pictures! 🙂

After climbing to the top you will be rewarded with superb views of Playa Blanca, islands and Playa Flaming. And on the amazing things there is bird sounds coming from the crater. Maybe you will not see the birds but you will hear them.

What is more to do there is to wait for evening and watch the sunset. Or for example you take a walk around the Montana Roja. It is just couple of miles and will not take more than an hour. But do not forget to take some water with you to cool up!

Well, it is a part of natural reserve and area of natural sensitivity. It is an unique natural landmark. It was formed after coastal eruption and is connected to the island by volcanic rock causeway. It is just 171 meters height but it is quite steep as standing just beside the ocean.

Montana Roja weather

 

Weather in Lanzarote is really mild. Weather is suitable for all year round traveling. Coldest months are January – February, when temperature can drop to 14 degrees Celsius or even more. The most warm period in Lanzarote is summer, July to September. Average high temperature reaches 30 degrees, sometimes can reach even 40 degrees Celsius.
